You might want to connect up with the folks here in the bike district (heliotrope and melrose). The guys at Orange 20 bikes are really into building bike communities and may be able to help you find or build a better one.

My boyfriend and I love riding our bikes. Recently we've gone on a few group rides in L.A. thinking they would be a lot of fun, but so far we've been disappointed :-( Some ride participants (particularly unsupervised kids) are vandalizing property or shoplifting. Some are inconsiderate of everyone around them when they ride, cutting people off and swerving into others. There really isn't a sense of community because everybody tends to stick with their little group on the ride and doesn't interact much with anybody else, even if you try to start a conversation with them. And the big thing that has really turned me off is that several people talking about the rides on message boards casually throw around the term "fag" and use "gay" in a derogatory way, which I find really offensive.

With that being said, I'd really like to find some group rides in L.A. (especially in/around the San Fernando Valley) that have more of a Burning Man vibe to them rather than the "bro" mentality we've encountered so far. I figured this group would be the best place to start! Does anybody know of any burner organized bike rides around town? To be clear we're just casual cyclists who like to bike around for fun, not pros training for competition ;-)
