I really like the idea. All the burner events you hear about always shun anything but absolutely necessary business (like admission fees, etc.) because of the "no commerce" BM thing. And i love that. However, I see no reason why we can't designate a function specifically for burners to do business. It is, for many of us, how we generate the money to get to the playa in the first place. And some of us do a lot more (financially) than just show up. Unless you're a trust fund baby, this is earned income.

Personally, I would much rather network with burners than most of the geeks I usually meet at networking events.

don't know if this counts, but I'm an L.A.-based henna artist, and I offer a discount for special body art for those going to the Playa. Every year I do designs for burners who plan to show off a lot of (decorated) skin.

for example, there was an accounting firm last tax season that gave Burners a discount on tax prep PLUS made a contribution to BWB for every return prepared for a Burner.

that kind of stuff. burner friendly.

I agree Slack.

Also - i know how expensive it is to get to the playa. As much as i could go to any tailor or shop to get things done... at this time of year, i'd like to support fellow burners who are trying to get to the playa themselves by using their services or buying their products.

And, of course, it's always fun to be able to share playa stories while getting my kilt/skirt, fur coat, altered. I don't think i can get that service at my local dry cleaners :-).

Yeah, and Chains, think about all those RV companies that won't rent to you if you're going to Burning Man. those are definitely burner un-friendly businesses. there's got to be the flip side to that coin.

-- what does burner friendly business even mean? --

to me it means people that have been, understand the culture, are willing to provide special consideration to fellow burners and/or keep it real... at least by providing the same kind of consideration and respect generally found on the playa.

my 2 cents.

good question!

Well, there's a whole tribe dedicated to burner's businesses, something like the Back Burner business tribe, or somesuch.

Hmmm, a Burner Business Bureau.... interesting idea. Never heard of one, but that doesn't mean a google search wouldn't turn one up. I'd start by finding Twan and asking him.

two part question for y'all...

1. is there a database anywhere out there of burner friendly businesses in LA?

2. My theme camp is trying to plan another fundraiser. Has anyone had any luck promoting for local bars that would give you a share of profits of the night that you promote on (usually slow nights like weekdays)?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
