Hey everyone,
I was wondering whether anyone would be interested in doing a bicycle ride/run/skate event along one of the river trails, just for the sake of fitness. (and socializing at the same time!)
The idea would be, say, choose a 20-25 mile course, going one way. Folks could choose modality (bike, walk, run, skate, or any combination thereof). It would be a leisurely fitness ride rather than a race, to burn calories & build endurance. (long slow distance builds endurance base and burns calories most effectively). The LA and San Gabriel river trails would be ideal because they have no vehicular traffic and are nearly 100% flat aside from the ramps underneath major streets.
There would be a "sag wagon" to pick up people who need to stop, also to pick up the finishers. We could gather at someone's house afterwards (such as mne) for showers, food, back rubs, relaxation, etc.
We could schedule it, say, a month or two from now to reduce likelihood of rain/cold.
Who'd be interested?
C'mon, let's get out there and move that ass to get in awesome shape for the playa--and more importantly, for living life!

Re: LA Burner fitness
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 10:52 PMsomething about half that distance would be at my fitness level, I'm sorry to day... I got tired just reading 25 miles... -

Re: LA Burner fitness
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 11:05 PMhell i got tired just 'reading' that offer ;)

Re: LA Burner fitness
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 11:31 PMYou could call it the:
LA Calorie Burner Club
-
Sounds like a board game
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 8:12 AMRiding a bike you could almost just coast. Tortoise & the Hare........be careful the walkers could be waiting for the rest at the finish.
I played a board game this rainy weekend. Walk for awhile, take any bus any direction for a little bit, walk, meet a friend, walk, hot tea, walk.........Party all night.........have coffee............continue where you left off.............

Re: LA Burner fitness
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 11:41 AMI love bikerides up to 10 miles but find that I do not have the stamina for 25 yet. Sorry love. I have a great new cruiser that's awesome to ride around town.
A bunch of burners practice down at Hollywood Aerial Arts in Inglewood and I highly recommend picking up a pack of classes there if you're into trapeze, rope, silk tissu or hoop/lyra. Awesome teachers that have kicked my a$$ in shape these last few months.
We met a sweet new LA burner recently who wanted to teach gyrotonic. Anyone else interested?

Re: LA Burner fitness
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 12:13 PMI probably wasn't clear.
What I meant was that you could choose how much / how long of the course you would want to do.
Walkers might only walk 3-4 miles. Cyclists chould choose 10, or even the whole 25.
We would need a van or something as a shuttle to come pick folks up as they hit their own finish lines.
I mean, it's not an entirely developed idea--that's why I'm throwing it out there, to be more fleshed out. But just the idea of getting out there together for a few hours--and everyone doing as much as they feel they are ready to do.
Is that better? :) -

Re: LA Burner fitness
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 12:32 PMMy mountain bike got stolen at Burning Man last year, so I only have a slow beach cruiser now--not very good for long distances. I might be into running part or all of the way after I've gotten back into shape. I'm waiting for the rains to stop and maybe get some physical therapy for my knee, then I'll resume trail running in the Santa Monica Mountains. Your thing sounds fun, but you'd have to scope out a way for the van to follow along the river.

Re: LA Burner fitness
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 1:42 PMSeriously, this is a math problem. I remember reading about the problem of a garbage truck to travel both sides of the streets of a city most efficiently
Decide on a course with 5 and or 10 mile points where there is a place where someone could park.
Walkers, at 5 + - miles, 3 or 4 of them could have one of their cars parked and go back to starting point together.
Skaters and such who would like to do 10 miles could have a similar arrangement.
The river rafters and sky divers could have a helicopter waiting at their decided point........and so on....
Cyclists would have to be the most committed and have a buddy or two who had room for as many bikes to return to starting point.

Re: LA Burner fitness
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 1:15 PMI recommend getting in touch with these folks:
latriclub.com/
There are a couple of burners in the club, and all in all they're a fun bunch. Just ignore the carbon fiber bike lust, and you'll fit in just fine. -

Re: LA Burner fitness
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 5:42 PMI'm interested. Make it an "up and back" kind of trek to satisfy everyone here... as in... park a car then ride 5 miles up and 5 miles back... or, 10 miles up and 10 miles back.... or ride slowly and turn around and go back when the speed demons are returning.... and then finish with a picnic... there's a parking lot at Griffith park that has river trail access, for example... that way, everyone can participate at their level and some may be encouraged to push themselves a bit -- or not.
As for skating -- I'm down if it's at the beach. I don't do too well on bumpy trails or asphalt since I quad-skate. And boy... am I outta shape, too... but I want to rock it at the burn this year!!!! -
-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 6:08 PMUp & back is definitely a possibility. The only thing is, one way (south) tends to have hellacious winds. Call me lazy, but if I'm to do 25 miles (which I totally want to do!!) I would rather have the wind at my back! that's way more fun than doing fewer miles with wind. plus you have the energy to stay out there longer at a lower heart rate, so you get a more effective long slow distance workout.
What do you all think?? cause we can put together here, whatever sort of (casual) event everyone wants.
The pavement on the river trails is usually as good as or better than anything youd get at the beach, with FAR fewer people.
We all wanna rock at the burn--hayll yeah!
whoops, time for work. gotta go! -

Re: LA Burner fitness
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 11:01 AMIf this gets scheduled for a Sunday there is a chance I might bike it.... If anyone needs to borrow a bike, I have quite a few left over from the playa.

Wed, January 30, 2008 - 12:29 AMThat sounds fabulous! We're down for the ride!

Re: LA Burner fitness
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 10:41 AMsounds interesting. It would be a great way to stay in shape, I would love to hear more. depending on my schedule, count me in -

Re: LA Burner fitness
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 11:50 AMDisclaimer: Unabashed Self pimping ahead.
Staff spinning is a great core workout. And it's really fun and easy, so your workout time feels like play time.
And on a completely unrelated note, I'm starting a class tomorrow. See my blog for details.
I'd also recommend a hoop or poi class for the same reasons. -
-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 5:32 PMWell, hi, Rif--I've heard such completely awesome things about you!!
I would take your class myself if it was compatible with my schedule/distance range.
So in addition to promoting your thorougly awesome class (I am not being sarcastic--I have no doubts about this), would you care to join us??

Roll Call so far
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 5:37 PMOk, so as far as I can tell, we have:
interested in doing about 10 miles:
Adele
evonne
Interested in doing the whole thing--or, maybe they might specify another distance:
Sendai
Cathleen T
Widget
O&S
Loki70
Unclear as to their interest
Lecter
Robin
Stream
Rif
Yes? correct?
can everyone specify a day?
Saturday might work. Sunday would work except for those of us who are up all hours Saturday night at burner parties. That includes me! -
-
Re: Roll Call so far
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 5:51 PMSince I consider typing this to be my exercise for the day, I would probably not make it more than ten feet, much less ten miles. So I shouldn't factor into any schedules/plans. :)
-
Re: Roll Call so far
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 7:05 PMI might be in.
I'm newly unemployed and love to bike.
Inge
ANY day is good for me from now on.
-
Re: Roll Call so far
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 8:55 PMI'm up for being one of the bike riders! It's going to be my playa bike... 'cuz the real world one has a flat tire.
Once some of the unknown factors get firmed up - date, time and location - I can say for sure if I can make it.
-
Re: Roll Call so far
Thu, January 31, 2008 - 1:31 AMWhole thing
by bike
for the same reason Sat. is best
-
Re: Roll Call so far
Thu, January 31, 2008 - 8:57 AMIf Widget lets me borrow a bike, I could do that for the whole length.

-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 6:38 PMI'm down for the full run on my bike, you can draft me if you think you can keep up! (I'm gonna get my butt kicked)
-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 9:55 AMI'd be interested. Is the path long board friendly? -
-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 5:02 PMWhy yes, it is indeed long board friendly.
When I have my calendar in front of me I will pick a Saturday date and a start location and post it here.
stay tuned! and feel free to continue checking in!! -

Re: LA Burner fitness
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 7:32 PMAwesome, calendar gods willing I can come....

Re: LA Burner fitness
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 11:54 PMSounds great to me! I'm up for bike rides of any and all lengths, 25 miles and beyond. (Though shorter rides are OK too!) I've only recently moved down to LA from Berkeley so I'm still exploring the trails around here and would love company for some rides.
-
-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Sun, February 3, 2008 - 5:23 PMOK, I will check with the LA Burners calendar and pick a Saturday in the semi-near future....
perhaps not immediately cause it's so damn cold recently.

-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Sun, February 3, 2008 - 10:26 PMI'm interested too. I did a large section of the San Gabriel river trail once (Azusa to Downey and back), and though it is flat-ish, starting in Azusa means the whole ride is uphill on the way back, and it was quite a job coming back. And I'm in worse shape now. Are there bike trails in the Burbank area? Where the equestrian areas are? -
-
Midnight Ridazz
Mon, February 4, 2008 - 9:57 AMHere's where all the rides in town are posted.
www.midnightridazz.com/
Definitely check out the Pillow Fight video! My kind of ride.

Re: LA Burner fitness
Tue, February 5, 2008 - 3:40 PMStream - No problem on the loan of a bike as long as you don't mind one that's been out to the playa and is painted odd colors, has fur, or is otherwise mutated. I'll have tools to adjust the seat height for you. I can fit four or five bikes on my rack.
Nick - Yes there are bike trails in and around Burbank! In fact, there's one that runs along Glenoaks near the 5 Freeway. In fact, a part of it is right next to the flood control channel and a "Class 1" path (dedicated to bikes off street). The L.A. River path is close to the Equestrian Center, but on the other side of the river.
A lot of river or should I say flood control channel access roads are being repurposed for bikes. I just noted another has been opened up in the SFV (not on the maps yet). Anyway, here's a couple of links that you all may find useful.
www.acityline.com/burbank/c...keway2.gif
www.metro.net/riding_metr...bike_map.pdf
You can get a pre-printed version of the metro transit map that's pretty nice (my parents gave me one they picked up from one of the metro station info kiosks).
Here's other links.....
www.labikepaths.com/bykinfo.html
www.labikepaths.com/
Anyway, I would suggest that we start off at the lowest point of the route so that we're pedaling, running, or skating more or less up stream (up hill) on the way out and then down slope on the way back. Of course, if it's windy we're screwed.
I recommend that everyone who is biking or skating wear a helmet. I have spares if anyone needs one. I will be happy to glue whatever hood ornament you want onto it. I think I'm going with rabbit ears on mine as a tribute to K Bun.

Re: LA Burner fitness
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 12:35 AMOkay, so I've been too lazy to look at the calendar.
Until now.
Who can do Saturday, March 1st??
That doesn't seem to conflict with any of our Burner events such as Fuente.
I suggest starting down in Seal Beach and heading northwards to LA.
Unless we don't have a sag wagon, in which case we should do a round-trip route starting by heading south (into the wind) first, then turning around & heading back north.
Do you all want to do the LA or San Gabriel river trail?
for info:
www.nearfield.com/~dan/spor.../river/sg/ (this site also contains a page on the LA River Trail)
Actually, I've never been at the northernmost portion of the SG River Trail. It looks really cool.
Tell me if you can make it that date and what is your suggestion for location. And if you know anyone who'd run a sag wagon, preferably someone who has a van. (Datig....??) -
-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 4:37 PMHmmm, I think that March 1st may be my only free Saturday so it should work for me.
After reading:
"Hazards: Gang activity, particularily in the middle trail segment. Broken glass from the drunks."
at the end of Veganskater's link, I vote for the L.A. River trail or just the less dangerous portions of the San Gabriel river.
We should discuss having vehicles at both ends of the ride unless everyone is committed to doing a round trip.
I don't know of any parties Friday the 29th, so is setting this up for 10:00 AM too early for you folks?
-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 4:43 PMI work Saturdays until 2:00PM. What about Sunday, March 2?
-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 10:44 PMI'm good for Saturday at 10am.
I'm good for Sunday at 2pm.
I prefer the LA River path. -
-
Re: LA Burner fitness
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 3:33 AMI can't do Saturday that weekend - actually I'll be in Canada then - but Sunday would work. Or else feel free to ride on Saturday and I'll catch up on the next one. (There *will* be a next one, right?)

Postponing!!
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 12:45 PMSorry folks...
my back just went into spasm...
they're telling me it's no big deal, just a minor setback.
but I need to be careful with it for the next several weeks, particularly before Fuente.
So I am POSTPONING this until after Fuente.
***Please suggest a weekend sometime after Fuente when there is not a regional event such as LIB, Alma, etc.!
what works for you?
hugs!

-
Re: Postponing!!
Fri, February 15, 2008 - 4:39 PMVS - Sorry to hear your back is giving you fits. Perhaps you could still support this venture by driving a sag vehicle and periodically cheering from the sidelines.
I'm still up for either Saturday or Sunday if K Bunny and Stream are willing to co-sponsor this little ride. Again, I propose we start at the lowest point and ride upstream, turning around whenever. -
-
Re: Postponing!!
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 7:27 PMSo did you all go?
I kinda doubt it.
Lucent was kind of a workout, though. ;)
I can go with you guys if you give me another week or two.
better yet, how 'bout right after Fuente? -
-
Re: It's on for March..... around 10:00 AM
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 4:56 PMHey VeganSkater!
Lulie and I did a little hike on Sunday up in the Santa Monicas and we got our exercise in for the weekend.
You suggested March 1st, so right now we (K Bunny and I) were leaning towards Sunday March 2nd (time to heal). Also I think that K Bunny has a party to go to that afternoon so we would like to do this thing at 10:00 in the morning.
If you and Stream can go we'll still do a "beach towards city" ride along one of the River Bike Paths. Since K Bun and I are out in the SFV we were contemplating changing the route to something along the L.A. River (like from Los Feliz to the Sepulveda Dam) in the SFV, but since you and Stream are on the Westside, we'll do anything anywhere, as long as playafied bikes are acceptable. -
-
Re: It's on for March..... around 10:00 AM
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 11:43 PMI'm not on the Westside. I'm in Long Beach.
but skates travel anywhere, no car hassle like bikes!
playafied bikes are great--means I can keep up with ya.
I have put it in my calendar.
Who else is in?? -

Re: It's on for March..... around 10:00 AM

Re: It's on for March..... around 10:00 AM
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 1:48 PMQuick update....
It's ON! But it looks like the consensus is that we're looking at doing this out in the SFV starting at Balboa Park (Balboa exit off the 101) at Victory.

Re: It's on for March..... around 10:00 AM
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 8:08 AMDamn. Were it not for church and the fact that I just got thrown off my bike across two lanes of Wilshire earlier in the week (injuries to me AND bike), I'd totally be down for this. I'm an inveterate distance biker, so this is totally up my alley. Ah well... let me know how it goes and perhaps I'll be in a better state of repair next time!
