all i can say is...thank god for Greensector stage and all the other dj's and artists who rocked it out and made my heart and soul soar, after dealing with a) traffic, b) two other major events happening in the same area as DeCom (??!!), c) pushy policemen, d) somewhat clueless security at the door of DeCom.....
man, was i happy to get a HELLO! and a hug from a beautifully dressed greeter-sister!
sorry, but this year's deCom (outside perimeter?) felt way more fascist and annoying than any year i can remember.....too much public coming in? too much publicity? somethin'.......once inside the fence.......felt much better......'cept for the helicopter circling us like something out of 'Escape from New York'.......
i was in such a good mood and ready to see all of my friends and trying to be 'good' and got by most of the cops ok, etc.....and then bammo! i got snatched and fucked with on the way in for *gasp* crossing the street! then waited in one line to get in while the other line flowed quite smoothly...while the line i was in suddenly stopped because the workers were being trained on "how to search bags" while we all stood there and waited!
i've worked this event as a volunteer for 2 or 3 years, and never ever ever have i seen or had to experience such crappola on the way in to one of the best parties in town......i know, i know....our law enforcement and workers are doing their best to keep us safe, yadda-yadda-yadda.....their also part of our "community" etc.etc.etc.......well, get the shit together......ain't no fun running the gauntlet or feeling like check-point charlie on the way into such a low-key event......felt like nazi bouncers and door people at high-end events at pretentious clubs!
and another thing.....since when do "burners" feel it's ok to take things just because they're playing with them at the end of the night,etc...? if you're playing with someone else's hoola-hoop....don't just assume you can take it! case in point: last night i had to convince a girl to leave the hoop for the rightful owner......five minutes later, the girl showed up and was happy to find her hoop leaning on the stage.......such behavior is unbecoming and quite telling.......If it Ain't Yours, Don't Take It
sorry, i had to get that two-cents-vent out!! luckily, yet again, last night a "dj saved my life"! peace..................

Re: So, how was your decompression?
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 8:20 PMI felt much of the same...
PARKING ? WTF ? last year for 10 bucks, you could park in a lot and have access to your car.... this year, "they" decided to have parking only for "performers"..... as in aren't we really included in that description ? I was also appalled and the option of lining the streets with "NO PARKING" signs, labeled "Saturday only" ...... normally, one could legally park anywhere surrounding the area, except for when you need to....again WTF ?
Do we REALLY require droves of LAPD, sheriff, park service, private security AND rangers ALL at the same little supposedly friendly burner event ? what was the justification for this, when previous years went off without issue ? or were there issues last year that came up ?
I also noticed a unusually high amount of parking enforcement vehicles circling the area like vultures, while I spend 20 minutes searching for a place to park...
Beyond the absolutely clueless private security, hostile lapd, and judgmental park service - the circling helicopter finally killed it for me...
Whoever was responsible for caving in to all of these "new and exciting additions" to meet the fearful demands of "the city" shame on you... -

Yea, it was unnecessary, excessive and ridiculous I must say. I felt like a criminal that was being watched. Other than the slight irritants, wow, what a fabulous evening! Great job to all that put this event on!

Re: So, how was your decompression?
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 9:23 AMLA has always (like my home of SF) struck me as containing big patches where parking is a PITA. I do'nt set myself up for it because I knew the situation and parked at Union Station. Many people benefited from this and it is always nice to share a train car with fellow burners as we are on our journey. Despite that I did find the helicopters a little much, I took the road of the ice cream cone route on this one.
I had a blast! Got to bring my partner to this event and give him a taste of what is to come (he is saving up to join me in 2011's burn). We liked the diverse amount of things out there and were pleased to see the art cars. Loved Boo Boo Kitty Camp's art car. Loved to see the kids interacting with its paws.
Greeting was sure fun for me as well. Met many people that way and got to hug as part of my "job". That is a job duty I could appreciate!:) My only "regret" was that I didnt get proper paper and pen in time to exchange contact with someone I met (He was the one that was working with petitions to legalize cannibus) outside the gate. As on playa, missed connections often happen. I even bumped into a couple people within some connecting interest groups. It was nice and there was always a change of pace.
Got lots of pictures!! Did you?

Re: So, how was your decompression?
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 10:36 AMi would say that for those of us who showed up early or set up camps, the morning and most of the event felt a lot like burningman. People setting up camp, lounging around, meeting your neighbors, etc.Experiences with cops and anyone outside the gates since (in my opinion), are a result of how they have to react to how non-burners act. There were a good number of people I saw at the gates who were just there for the party aspect of it all. It's kinda like when the weekenders arrive and all of a sudden the amount of moop and douchebaggery around the city increases. I met a lot of people who had never been to burningman and were using this event as a way to 'test the waters' and see if they would consider going next year.
As for the helicopter... they showed up last year as well. They would have showed up and left, but some douchebag started shining his laser up at the helicopter (from what I heard from a couple security guys)... So of course they stayed longer and the guy eventually got caught (arrested, I think).
Again - blame it on idiots.
All in all, i think it was a great event. I know its just going to keep getting better. I'd really encourage everyone to try and set up a theme camp or volunteer... Next year - more megaphones. Save the man protesters. billion bunny marches. lets really bring the playa to LA!

Re: So, how was your decompression?
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 11:21 AMI agree. I had a blast being part of a Stage/Camp. But I felt sorry for those who had to deal with those "No Parking on Saturday night during the hours of..." (with the hours obviously targeting the event) signs.
Next time do your own gig. And if you have any friends who are yahoo's, edumicate their stupid asses on the ways of a friendly Playa.
NO Spectators!!! -

Re: So, how was your decompression?
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 12:34 PMHave to agree with Sunny and Vhilm...
We didn't leave until after 6 last night (break down and park wide mooping effort-yay!) and I swear I feel like I need a decompression from the decompression!
Totally different vibe than what I'm hearing from some burners coming in to the event after it started... I spoke to a couple park rangers throughout and after the event, and not only were they pretty cool; they dug our group-one called us "mellow" HAHA... I know I worked my ass off harder than any other decom, but came away feeling it was so worth it... Kinda sad to see some had some bad vibes from outside (Green Sector was a godsend-finished my night off there, actually)... We definitely had some restrictions put on us (no ins and outs after the event for those of us camping overnight-which meant no Space Island for us) but they were worth it when the reward was built relationships with some really cool burners I probably wouldn't have hung with otherwise...
Aside from a couple of minor asshole yahoo encounters (like we have every year); i.e. the presumable wasted moron who intentionally threw acrylic hot pink paint on our amazing marker mural so many contributed to; we had a freaking blast with everyone who came through our camp, and when we traveled to others...

Re: So, how was your decompression?
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 1:33 PMit really was overRun and dominated
by the self-proclaimed "elitist burner crew"
the one who says "oh yes come and participate"
and then aforementioned american apparel crowd
o vibe out participation
being condescending and snarky
towards the brave souls
who actually had the guts to *do* something.....
there was *so* much less art and installations
then in years past
so many fewer free spirits
or buoyant energy
ie: one instance
therewas a bomb-ass drum circle at the tail end
that people were totally digging and vibing on
actually spaZass dancing and being truly free
and instead of asking nicely for dispersion
acknowledging that it was a cool happening -
or maybe say something move and drum as an exit strategy
they quite catty rude
(the crowd was very much cheering and appreciating the spontaneous nature of it.)
doing the "throat slit silence" pantomime
*immediately* at the strike of midnight.
since when
has their not been some trail end shenanigans like that?
this is the only year it was so
INSTANTLY squelched
and vibed so toxicly --
and it really seemd like the main reason behind it
was swaying the herd to
maximize the profit for the steep cover after-party.
yuck. -

Re: So, how was your decompression?
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 10:14 PMMore likely that the park had strict rules about when things shut down and when it had to be vacated by all but the people breaking things down. It's a nice site but some place with less stringent rules would be better. (And moving it to a day other than the one that the Eagle Rock Music Festival occurs on would definately be better.)

Re: So, how was your decompression?
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 10:53 PMI didn't even show up until after 11pm and that was only to meet someone and repay a loan. If I didn't get in for free, I wouldn't have even done that. I don't think anything is going to change any time soon.
